Mazagan

Mazagan is the former name of what is now El Jadida, a Portuguese settlement established on Morocco's Atlantic coast in 1502 and held for some 267 years before being liberated in 1769. The Portuguese fortified it heavily, brought their architectural traditions to it, and used it as a major supply port on the sea route to India and the East. When they finally withdrew, the entire population was relocated to found a new Mazagan in what is now Brazil's Amapá state.
