Mondsee
Austria
A modest lakeside town in Upper Austria's Salzkammergut region, Mondsee is best known for the medieval Mondsee Abbey, whose church served as the wedding location in The Sound of Music. Prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements nearby are part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation, and the town holds a railway museum dedicated to the SKGLB line. Set against mountain terrain on the shore of the lake that shares its name, it has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size.
