Monreale

Monreale Cathedral, built by the Norman king William II of Sicily and inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale" in 2015, is the centrepiece of this hillside town above Palermo. Set on the slopes of Mount Caputo, the town developed around a Norman royal hunting site — the name itself derives from the Latin Mons Regalis — and has been an archdiocese since 1183. A compact centre with cafés and restaurants sits alongside several historic churches, with views down over the valley of Palermo below.
