Founded by Spanish colonists on 25 July 1540 as the first Spanish city in the Peruvian Amazon, Moyobamba is the capital of Peru's San Martín region and carries the nickname "City of Orchids" — more than 3,500 orchid species grow in the surrounding area, representing around ten percent of all described species worldwide. The city hosts an annual Orchid Festival each October, and its walkable centre has a concentration of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding highlands.
