Founded in 1923 to house refugees displaced by the 1922 catastrophe in Asia Minor, Nikaia is a densely populated suburb of the Piraeus agglomeration in the southwestern Athens urban area, with a busy café and restaurant scene and historic churches in its centre. The town, renamed from Kokkinia in 1940, holds official recognition as a martyr city for the atrocities it suffered during the Axis occupation, including the events known as the Battle of Kokkinia and the Blockade of Kokkinia.
