The Felsenkirche — a late 15th-century church built directly into a vertical rock face above the old town — is the defining landmark of Idar-Oberstein, a gemstone and jewelry town in Rhineland-Palatinate where the River Nahe runs underground through the centre. The church, whose construction is tied to a medieval fratricide legend, holds a Gothic winged altar from 1410 and a Stumm organ from 1756. The town has been a hub of agate cutting since the Middle Ages and remains an international center for the jewelry trade, with the Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum displaying stones in raw and finished form.
