This walkable city in northern Poland with a Gothic Old Town at its centre, Olsztyn is known for its medieval Castle of the Warmian Cathedral Chapter and St. James Co-cathedral, regarded as one of the greatest monuments of Gothic architecture in Poland. The castle also holds an astronomical table made by Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived here and led the city's defence against a Teutonic invasion in 1521. The centre has a dense café and restaurant scene, and the city sits alongside Masurian lakes.
