A city on the Limarí River in Chile's Coquimbo Region, Ovalle has a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants, vineyards in the surrounding valley, and large reservoirs nearby. Founded in 1831 and named for acting president José Tomás Ovalle, the city sits within reach of the Valle del Encanto national monument, the UNESCO-recognised Fray Jorge National Park, and the summer beach resort of Los Peñones. The Limarí Archaeological Museum holds ceramics from the Diaguita, Ánimas, and El Molle cultures.
