Known as the Cuna del Carnaval Argentino — the birthplace of Argentine carnival — Paso de los Libres is a town on the western bank of the Uruguay River in Corrientes province, facing the Brazilian city of Uruguaiana across an international bridge. Carnival celebrations here date to records from 1879, with Brazilian-style festivities incorporated from the late 1940s. The town is also the birthplace of Arturo Frondizi, Argentine president from 1958 to 1962, and was founded in 1843 by General Joaquín Madariaga.
