Peniche
Oeste · Portugal
This photogenic Atlantic-facing town on the Portuguese coast in the Oeste region, Peniche has a walkable centre with a real food-and-drink scene and water views from multiple vantage points. Its 16th-century fortress, begun in 1557, served as a political prison under the Estado Novo regime and now houses a museum dedicated to resistance against that government.
