This lakeside town in the mountains of northern Thailand, Phayao sits on the shore of Phayao Lake and traces its origins to a city-state founded between 900 and 1,000 years ago. The walkable centre has a good spread of cafés and restaurants, and the town sits roughly 100 km northeast of Chiang Mai.
