Piazza Armerina
Enna · Italy
The Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 celebrated for its extensive Roman mosaics, sits just outside this Sicilian hill town in the province of Enna. Piazza Armerina itself has a walkable historic centre of Baroque and Norman architecture, a concentration of churches, and a medieval street layout — the town was once called Urbs Opulentissima and is still known as the City of Mosaics. An annual Norman festival, the Palio dei Normanni, adds a living historical dimension to the visit.
