Founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1532 as the first Spanish city established in South America, Piura is a large commercial city in northwestern Peru's Piura River valley, north of the Sechura Desert. Its walkable centre has a solid café and restaurant scene, and the city is known for its Peruvian cuisine. Piura declared independence from Spain in January 1821, several months before Peru as a whole. It sits near the Ecuadorian border, with the coast and Andean highlands both within reach.
