Sitting on the eastern shore of the Madeira River, one of the Amazon's main tributaries, Porto Velho is the capital of Brazil's Rondônia state and a major trading hub for cassiterite and tin mining in the upper Amazon basin. The riverfront gives the city its most immediate draw, with the surrounding region offering scenic viewpoints across the Amazonian landscape.
