Pyrgos
Ηλεία · Greece
A regional capital in the northwestern Peloponnese built across seven low hills, Pyrgos sits a short distance from the Ionian Sea and serves as the administrative and commercial hub of Elis. The town's name traces to a tower built here in 1512, and it played a role in the 1821 Greek War of Independence — the first Greek town destroyed by Ottoman forces during that conflict. Ancient Olympia lies a short drive to the east, making Pyrgos a practical base for the wider region.
