The provincial capital of Badghis in northwestern Afghanistan, Qala i Naw sits on a broad plain near the Turkmenistan border and lies on the Afghanistan Ring Road, making it a significant stop for travellers crossing the region. The city's name translates as "New Fortress," and it has historical roots as a centre associated with Sunni Hazara communities, formally designated as the provincial capital during the reign of Amanullah Khan.
