Quezaltepeque

A small agricultural town in the mountain terrain of Guatemala's Chiquimula department, Quezaltepeque takes its name from a Nahuatl word meaning "hill of birds." The local economy centres on coffee, maize, and beans, with sugarcane cultivation significant enough that residents are commonly nicknamed "cachaceros" after cachaza, the cane juice extracted there. Each November, the town marks its patron saint Francis of Assisi with a festival running from the 8th to the 13th, accompanied by traditional dances including the Baile de Toro Pinto and the Danza de los Chincheneros.
