Rajshahi's long-standing identity as Bangladesh's silk city makes it a practical base for buying pure silk products at prices lower than elsewhere in the country. The city sits on the north bank of the Padma River and holds the Varendra Research Museum, the oldest of its kind in Bangladesh, alongside ancient mosques, shrines, and temples. It is also known for its mangoes, lychees, and as a major centre of education, home to Rajshahi University, one of the country's largest.
