Rybinsk
Russia
Volga River city in Yaroslavl Oblast with 19th-century merchant architecture lining its embankment, Rybinsk was chartered in 1777 and grew into one of Russia's largest grain-trading hubs before the revolution — earning the nickname "capital of the barge haulers." The construction of the Rybinsk Hydroelectric Station in the 1930s created what was then the world's largest artificial reservoir to the city's northwest. Today Rybinsk is part of the Golden Ring of Russia tourist circuit, with a walkable centre along the water and a café and restaurant scene in the historic core.
