One of Christendom's most important pilgrimage sites in the 12th century, Saint-Gilles-du-Gard is a modest town in the Gard department of southern France whose abbey church — listed as a historic monument since 1840 — still holds the tomb of Saint Gilles the Hermit. Set within the Camargue delta, the town sits alongside the Rhône and the Canal du Rhône à Sète, with a small central core of cafés and restaurants and several protected natural areas nearby.
