This small North Carolina village near the South Carolina state line sits in mountain terrain and is known for its place at the top of the Saluda Grade, once the steepest main-line standard-gauge railway in the United States until Norfolk Southern ceased operations there in 2001. Located between Asheville and Spartanburg, South Carolina, Saluda also sits near the headwaters of the Saluda River.
