Founded on 5 July 1683, this walkable city in northwestern Argentina draws pilgrims and visitors alike to its colonial architecture and historic churches, most notably the 1694 church of the Virgen del Valle, whose venerated image is the focus of a major annual pilgrimage. The centre has a lively café and restaurant scene, and the city sits at the foot of the Ambato and Ancasti ranges beside the Río del Valle, serving as a base for wider travel through Catamarca Province.
