Founded in 1562 as San Juan de la Frontera, this Cuyo region city is the capital of Argentina's San Juan province and a base for the province's wine routes, with vineyards and the Ullum reservoir and dam in the surrounding area. The centre has wide, tree-lined avenues, a walkable café and restaurant scene, and a concentration of historic churches, while the Andes provide a mountain backdrop to the west.
