Sitting at the confluence of the Grande and Xibi Xibi rivers, surrounded by mountains that carry snow in winter, San Salvador de Jujuy is the capital of Argentina's Jujuy Province and holds two national records: it is both the northernmost and the highest provincial capital in the country. The walkable centre has a concentration of historic churches alongside cafés and restaurants, and the city sits near the southern end of the Humahuaca Canyon where wooded hills meet the lowlands.
