Sancerre is a medieval hilltop village in the Cher département of Centre-Val de Loire, overlooking the Loire river and recognized as one of France's most beautiful villages. It is the home of Sancerre wine and the origin of Crottin de Chavignol cheese, with an unusually dense café and restaurant scene for a village its size. The 1509 belfry, the Tour des Fiefs — last remnant of the old feudal castle — and several Gothic houses add architectural depth, and the tower offers panoramic views across the surrounding wine country.
