Copper craftsmanship rooted in the pre-Hispanic Purépecha tradition defines this compact Pueblo Mágico in Michoacán, Mexico, near the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro and a short drive from the colonial city of Morelia. Known officially as Salvador Escalante but universally called Santa Clara del Cobre, the town has produced copper goods for centuries, with the craft revived in the mid-20th century after a period of decline. Its artisans earned Mexico's National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the Popular Arts and Traditions category in 1984.
