Santa Rosa de Copán
Honduras
This highland town in western Honduras whose cobblestone centre — declared a national monument in 1991 — preserves Republican and Neoclassical architecture rooted in an 18th-century tobacco industry that still drives the local economy today. The La Flor de Copán cigar factory operates here, and the compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants. Santa Rosa de Copán also sits between Copán Ruinas and Gracias, making it a practical base for the wider region, including Celaque National Park.
