A highland town in northeastern Turkey's Giresun Province, Şebinkarahisar sits at elevation in the Black Sea region's mountain terrain. Sultan Mehmed II passed through in 1473 on his return from the Battle of Otlukbeli, and the town's current name was personally proposed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during a visit in October 1924, when he declared his admiration for the place and suggested renaming it from Şarkikarahisar to Şebinkarahisar.
