Sekigahara

Japan

The Battle of Sekigahara, fought here in 1600, ended Japan's Sengoku Period and established the Tokugawa Shogunate, making this tiny town in Gifu Prefecture one of the country's most significant historical battlefields. The site also preserves traces of the earlier Jinshin War of ancient Japan. Sister-city ties with Waterloo and Gettysburg reflect the battle's standing among world-historical turning points. Visitors come primarily to walk the battlefield and explore the surrounding terrain in the mountains of western Gifu.
