Selma, on the banks of the Alabama River in south central Alabama, is best known as the site of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, including "Bloody Sunday," when peaceful protesters were assaulted by police — events that galvanized national support for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The city also carries a Civil War record as a Confederate armaments and iron shipbuilding centre, site of the Battle of Selma. Today it focuses on heritage tourism built around its central role in the civil rights movement.
