This compact historic town in the Oise department north of Paris, Senlis preserves a medieval old quarter of ancient lanes and houses enclosed within Gallo-Roman and medieval ramparts, centred on a Gothic cathedral. Early French monarchs used the town as a base for hunting in the nearby Chantilly forest. A protected conservation zone established in 1962 covers the historic core, and the town sits on the Nonette river between the forests of Chantilly, Ermenonville, and Halatte.
