Sewel

Sewell is an uninhabited former mining town high in the Chilean Andes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Built by the Braden Copper Company to house workers at El Teniente — the largest underground copper mine in the world — the town reached a population of around 16,000 at its peak in 1960 before being gradually vacated after copper mining was nationalised in 1971. Restored buildings remain on the Andean slopes, and the site holds status as a Chilean National Monument since 1998.
