Shaoxing
Zhejiang Province · China
Shaoxing, a large city in northeastern Zhejiang, is one of China's classic Jiangnan water towns, its centre threaded with traditional bridges, canals, and wooden boats. The city is the origin of Shaoxing yellow wine, a fermented rice wine with a long brewing tradition, and is known for blue calico printing and stinky tofu. It was home to the writer Lu Xun and the calligrapher Wang Xizhi, and sites including Lu Xun's former residence, East Lake, and the Mausoleum of Yu the Great draw visitors to its historic core. Hangzhou lies just to the west.
