A port city on Maizuru Bay in northern Kyoto Prefecture, Shin-maizuru sits where the bay meets the Sea of Japan. The eastern harbour has served as a naval base since the Imperial Japanese Navy era and remains a Maritime Self-Defense Force installation today, while the western harbour has functioned as a commercial port since the era of the kitamaebune trading ships. The city also claims, alongside Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture, to be the birthplace of nikujaga, the Japanese meat-and-potato stew.
