Once the colonial administrative capital of both Bali and the wider Lesser Sunda Islands, Singaraja is northern Bali's largest city, sitting on the coast with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. Wide, grand streets and old colonial-era houses set in large gardens give it a different character from the rest of the island. The city's name translates from Sanskrit as "Lion King," and it served as Bali's provincial capital until 1958, when that role passed to Denpasar.
