Spakenburg
Netherlands
This traditional fishing village on the Eemmeer in the Dutch province of Utrecht, Spakenburg has retained its working waterfront character even as its fleet has shrunk since the Afsluitdijk cut it off from the Zuiderzee. Fish processing and trade remain part of the local economy, and the village — now administratively merged with the neighbouring farming settlement of Bunschoten — offers a café and restaurant scene and several historic churches for a place of its size.
