Spiš Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in the 12th century and one of the largest castle complexes in Europe, rises directly above this tiny Slovak town in the Prešov Region. The castle — a filming location for productions including Dragonheart and The Lion in Winter — was for centuries the dominant centre of power in the region. Below it, the town holds Renaissance merchants' houses, a disused synagogue, and the adjacent ecclesiastical settlement of Spišská Kapitula.
