Stara Zagora, a city in Bulgaria's Upper Thracian Plain, holds what are considered Europe's best-preserved Neolithic dwellings — discovered in 1968 and dating to the mid-6th millennium BC — now open as a museum alongside Roman-era mosaics from the ancient city of Augusta Traiana. The centre has a dense café and gallery scene, vineyards lie in the surrounding region, and the city was also home to the second opera house opened in Bulgaria, founded in 1925, and the country's first European-style public park, laid out in 1895.
