A compact Dutch town in Overijssel with a heritage-dense centre, canal-lined streets, and a good concentration of cafés and restaurants. Steenwijk received city rights in 1327 and played a strategic role in the Eighty Years' War, falling to Spanish forces in 1581 before being recaptured by the Dutch in 1592; the old moats and ramparts from that era are still visible. The wider municipality includes the village of Giethoorn, and several UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the broader region.
