This tiny town on the Motru River in Romania's Mehedinți County, Strehaia has a documented history stretching back to the 15th century, when it served briefly as the seat of the ban — a regional governor's office relocated from Turnu Severin during repeated Ottoman raids. A cattle market recorded here before 1653 remained a local institution for centuries, and in 1821 the town saw fighting between Tudor Vladimirescu's pandurs and the Domneascǎ militia. Vineyards surround the area, and the wider Oltenia region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
