A tiny wine-country town on the slopes of the Little Carpathians northeast of Bratislava, Svätý Jur has cultivated terraced vineyards for more than 700 years. Its intact historic centre was declared a protected reservation in 1990, and the surrounding area includes the Šúr nature reserve, one of the last large swamp alder forests of its kind in Central Europe. The town sits on the main Bratislava–Košice railway line, making it easy to reach from the capital.
