Founded in 1551 as a fortress assembled in just four weeks from prefabricated parts floated down the Volga, Sviyazhsk is a pocket-sized historic settlement in Tatarstan that sits at the confluence of the Volga and Sviyaga rivers — effectively an island since a reservoir was created downstream in 1955, though a causeway connects it to the mainland. Its Assumption Cathedral and Monastery earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017, and the entire territory functions as a federal museum-reserve. Boats run from Kazan in summer, making it a manageable day trip from the regional capital.
