Tacloban City sits on the waterfront of Leyte island in the Eastern Visayas, with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants. The regional capital briefly served as the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth government from late 1944 into early 1945, and hosts the Pintados Festival, a cultural event commemorating the early settlers of the area. The city was largely destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and has since rebuilt; Pope Francis visited in January 2015 to hold a mass in the aftermath.
