Taiz
Yemen
Yemen's designated cultural capital, Taiz sits high in the southwestern highlands at the foot of Jabal Sabr, one of the country's tallest peaks. The city reached its historical peak as capital of the Rasulid dynasty from 1229 to 1454, and its historic core holds the Cairo Citadel, ancient mosques, and medieval religious schools including the Muzaffariyya and Ashrafiyya. One of Yemen's most temperate and well-watered cities, it is a large highland metropolis with a layered Islamic-era history stretching back to the Sulayhid period.
