Tarapoto

Peru

Founded in 1782 on the high jungle plateau of northern Peru, Tarapoto sits along the Shilcayo and Cumbaza rivers with the Cordillera Escalera conservation area to the north and a fertile agricultural valley to the south. Known as the City of Palms, it serves as the main commercial and tourism hub of the San Martín region, with a strong café and restaurant scene, waterfalls and lagoons within reach, and access to adventure activities including river rafting, kayaking, and birdwatching in the surrounding cloud forest.
