North-coast city in Central Java, Tegal sits on the Java Sea with mountain views to the south. It has a long history in the colonial sugar trade — the Dutch East Indies sugar industry originated here — and the city later served as a port for exporting sugar from nearby plantations. Tegal is also the source of several widely sold Indonesian tea brands, including teh botol Sosro, and gave its name to the warung tegal, or "warteg," a style of simple Indonesian eatery found across the country.
