Nationally recognized for its Tân Cương tea, Thai Nguyen is a northern Vietnamese city on the Cau River, with mountains close by and a large university presence. The city also carries an industrial identity: it became the site of Vietnam's first steel mill in 1959 and remains the country's largest metallurgical centre. Established formally in 1962, it previously served as the capital of the Viet Bac Autonomous Region from 1956 to 1965.
