Fanjingshan (Mount Fanjing), the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, lies within this prefecture-level city in eastern Guizhou, bordering Hunan and Chongqing. The mountain holds significance in Buddhism and is the only natural habitat of the endangered Guizhou snub-nosed monkey. The city's Wanshan District was historically a major centre of mercury and cinnabar mining, earning the name "Cinnabar Capital of China," and the wider area is home to a large Tujia population alongside more than two dozen other ethnic groups.
