Founded on 27 November 1620, when the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria was established in an already-existing settlement, the city is the capital of Santiago Mariño Municipality and forms part of the greater Maracay metropolitan area, roughly a two-hour drive from Caracas.
