Vallenar
Chile
Founded in 1789 by Ambrose O'Higgins and named after his birthplace in County Sligo, Ireland, Vallenar is a town in Chile's Atacama Region set in the valley of the Huasco River. It serves as the main service hub for iron mining in the wider Huasco basin, which also holds copper and gold deposits. Llanos de Challe National Park lies to the northwest, and the town provides access to the inland commune of Alto del Carmen.
